The Space
A traditional Indian home in the heart of Kolkata city owned by one of the city’s prominent builder families.
The Ask
This was a project that came to us half done. So, certain decisions were already made and we had to work around it. The owners were clear that they were looking to redo the space aesthetically and wanted the space to speak of the family’s rich heritage.
The Result
The amount of trust that our client had in us was really inspiring and made us want to do our very best. Since the client is a working couple, we were looking for furniture that was easy to maintain without having to compromise on style or elegance. We travelled overseas to buy most of the furniture and the client approved all of it simply on our word after looking at the pictures.
The couple are serious art collectors and have a remarkable art collection. We made the most of this throughout their home.
The whole point of renovating the house was to have an open space with dog friendly interiors.
Since they had already bought Italian marbles for their flooring, we were happy to integrate it into our plan. We got the client to put us in touch with his sister-in-law, Palak Chaudhary, who is a watercolour artist. We asked her to paint an original design for the rugs and she obliged happily. We then got her creation hand-weaved onto the rugs in Varanasi. Within a few weeks, we had exotic looking, one-of-a-kind rugs for our client’s home.
When the client entered the home, post-renovation, their reaction was unforgettable. They were over the moon to be able to call this perfect blend of modernity and tradition, their home.
